Editor’s note: The parent organization for YEPT is Earth Charter Indiana, who offers annual camps for kids to learn about climate science, sustainability, food justice, and other eco-issues. One such camp is Bus Camp, offered for two separate weeks each summer. Each day, campers take the city bus to a different destination to enjoy nature while learning how to ride the bus system. On this particular day, Fiehrer accompanied Bus Camp to 100 Acres on the grounds of Newfields in Indianapolis, Indiana.
On day one of Bus Camp, campers receive their bus passes for the week, and learn how to scan those passes. Kayla from IndyGo, left, talks to the bus campers about how the system works.
Campers board the #34, headed for 100 Acres.
Kayla gives final instructions to the campers before the adventure begins.
About a ten minute walk from the bus stop, this paradise appears.
Adjacent to 100 Acres is the White River. Here, campers have discovered a slide in the river, and are attempting to use it for their own fun.
Two campers enjoy the White River.
This camper uses the abandoned slide for relaxation purposes.
The shade of the nearby woods provided relief from the heat.
Camp co-director Colleen and a bus camper play in a 100 Acres exhibit.
Each day of Bus Camp we collected litter, participating in Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Great Indy Cleanup. On this particular day, we fortunately did not find much litter!
Happy bus campers return to the Julia Carson Transit Center, to be picked up by their parents, or to return home on IndyGo.
